Use-Based Framework for Text Analysis

learning cultures

This Framework, developed by Cynthia McCallister, provides a way to analyze a text based on how people use language in social communication. The Cooperative Principle, developed by Paul Grice, is adapted to the Framework. 'Grice's Maxims' of quality, quantity, relevance, and manner, are used as probes to help analyze texts. The idea that texts are forms of action--speech acts--is also used as a frame of analysis. Probes for the author's intention, the literal meaning of a text, and the way a text was interpreted are provided.
