Responsibility Teams (R-Teams) provide the opportunity for a small group of diversely-abled students to work cooperatively together to access curriculum content independently and without the need to rely on teacher transmission of content. In groups, students follow procedures that enable each group member to successfully complete a task that resembles a high-stakes challenge that each student will independently face in the future. The Responsibility Team system provides a context in which content subject learning can be approached from a collaborative, game-like stance. Through a rigorous process of team-work and collaboration, students prepare for a future challenge, such as a high-stakes or end-of-unit assessment, through a highly-systematized team learning process.
The ‘object’ of the game is for students to work in interdependent teams to compete against other teams to make the greatest gains on a content assessment. Team members also complete social-emotional assessments for each member of their group. Each member calculates their average score, and receives feedback and support from the group in improving their ‘soft skills,’ or social-emotional competencies, throughout the unit with the goal of improving their mean average score on a social-emotional post-assessment. Teachers and students adhere to procedures and expectations outlined in the Responsibility Team Rubric, and use the C-DEEP social emotional assessment, which is designed to assess the skills of cooperation, discipline, effort, emotional self-regulation, and persistence.
